No. 2 Salpointe will play No. 3 Catalina Foothills Thursday night in a 4A semifinal game scheduled to be played at Amphitheater at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the championship set for Saturday afternoon.
No. 3 Sierra Linda (26-2) and No. 6 Cienega (18-6) are all set to battle in the bottom half of the 5A semifinals scheduled for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Grand Canyon University.
It was a bad night for the 5A teams from Southern Arizona as No. 5 Buena, No. 6 Cienega and No. 10 Sahuaro all fell in the quarterfinal round on Saturday night but the results were completely opposite in the 4A bracket where two powerhouse programs from the Kino Region will meet for the third time this year.
No.7 Cienega upset No. 2 Arcadia Friday night in 5A action to advance to the semifinal round to be played next Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Grand Canyon University. The Bobcats (18-6) are the only 4A to 6A team from Southern Arizona to survive the night. Tucson (6A), Marana (5A), Ironwood Ridge (5A), Pueblo (4A) and Canyon del Oro (4A) all lost in the various quarterfinal rounds.
No. 13 Sabino was the only 3A team from Southern Arizona to advance to the second round. The Sabercats (16-11) beat No. 20 Monument Valley 57-41 to set up a game against No.4 American Leadership (17-5) in a game to be played at Poston Butte High School.
No. 13 Mountain View came back from a first-half deficit to beat No.20 Carl Hayden 59-53 in a 5A play-in game held in Marana Friday night. The Falcons led 24-11 with 7:12 left in the second quarter and 32-24 at the half.
No. 5 Catalina Foothills claimed the 4A Kino Region title with a 56-48 win over No.3 Salpointe on Thursday night. The victory gave the Falcons a 7-0 record in region play and a 14-3 record in power-ranking games.
Ironwood Ridge is clinging to one of the final spots in the 5A play-in tournament and the Nighthawks improved their chances with a 66-49 win at Flowing Wells Monday night. Ranked 23rd coming, the Nighthawks need to finish the year ranked in the top 24 to qualify for the tournament scheduled for Friday, Feb. 10.
The Gregory School standout Nick Rosquist broke 2,000 career points in a 68-49 win at Desert Christian Saturday night. Rosquist finished with 31 points and five 3-pointers to give him 2,018 career points. He is now fifth on the All-Time scoring list from Southern Arizona.
Marana beat Desert View 3-0 Monday night to set up a 5A Sonoran battle against Flowing Wells on Tuesday night. Marana (3-0 in region play) was ranked 10th coming in and Flowing Wells (3-0) was on the edge at 24. In essence, Flowing Wells has to beat Marana to secure a playoff spot.
