Grand Canyon University packed a day full of great performances in the return of the spiritline state championships to the Valley.

More than 5,500 fans also got to cheer Saturday at GCU’s cozy basketball arena. Some of the day’s headliners were Chaparral, which won its program’s first overall title, the Division I co-ed championship crown of Nogales over some big schools and Cactus Shadows’ dominance in Division II.

“Overall it was a great, high energy day,” David Hines, the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s associate executive director, said. “The teams competed against each other, but they also showed a lot of support for one another. It was an ideal setting for the high school community.”
