Chinle 6-foot-2 junior phenom Cooper Burbank turned in a 'Monster Game', while leading the Wildcats to an impressive 72-41 victory over the Tuba City Warriors in 3A North boy's basketball action this past Saturday.

Burbank scorched the cords for 27 points and dished off five assists. The highlight of the game was Burbank's Slam Dunk, his first of his high school career.

Chinle head coach Raul Mendoza said his prize player had an impressive ball game.

"Cooper Burbank had a 'Monster of a Game'," Mendoza said. "Not only did he lead in scoring, but he his first Slam Dunk of his career. He also had five assists in the game."

Chinle won its third game last week. After returning from its Christmas holiday break, the Wildcats defeated the Many Farms Lobos, 87-15, beat Kayenta Monument Valley Mustangs, 49-33. and ended the week with a win over Tuba City.

Chinle improved its overall record to 17-4. The Wildcats ends its four-game homestand on Tuesday, entertaining the Wingate (New Mexico) Bears in a 7:30 p.m. matchup.

Chinle 72, Tuba City 41

Chinle led from start to finish when the Wildcats posted a 72-41 win in 3A North play.

Chinle shot the ball well during the opening eight minutes of the game, canning 20 points. Tuba City netted 14 points. The Wildcats took a 37-27 halftime lead.

Chinle came out in the third quarter on fire. The Wildcats outscored the Warriors, 22-9, to take a commanding 59-36 advantage when the third period expired. Chinle netted 13 points to Tuba City's five points during the final quarter of action.

"I thought we had the best offensive game of the year," Mendoza said. "We were able to get everyone in the game."

Chinle's Cooper Burbank pumped in 27 points, followed by Curtis Begay with 18 points and Kylen Yazzied added 10 points.

Chinle 49, Kayenta Monument Valley 33

In a 3A North contest, Chinle outlasted Kayenta Monument Valley, 49-33.

Chinle raced out to a 13-5 first period lead. The tempo of the shifted to uptempo in the second quarter. The Wildcats outscored the Mustangs, 13-12. Chinle held a 26-17 halftime lead.

The tempo of the game slowed down in the third quarter. The Wildcats canned eight points and the Mustangs scored seven points. Chinle increased its lead to 34-24 when the third quarter ended. Chinle put the game in the books in the fourth quarter, when outscoring the Mustangs, 15-9.

"We got into early foul trouble with Angelo Lewis and Cooper Burbank," Mendoza said. "That may have had an effect in our play. Cael Denetdeel came in and helped with some key defensive rebounds. We also had Kylen Yazzie come in to pick up the slack when Cooper Burbank picked up his fourth foul early in the fourth quarter."

Chinle 87, Many Farms 15

Chinle began its homestand with an 87-15 win over the Many Farms Lobos in a freedom game.

The Wildcats took a 19-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Chinle extended its lead to 48-9 at end of the first half.

Chinle held Many Farms scoreless in the third quarter, while the Wildcats chalked up 28 points. With a running clock, the Wildcats outscored the Lobos, 11-6, during the final period.

Cooper Burbank tallied 18 points, followed by Angelo Lewis with 12 points for Chinle. Cael Denetdeel added 10 points, Curtis Begay, Jason John and Colin Yazzie each netted eight points for Chinle.

"Defensively, we played very well," Mendoza said. "Our defense led us to high percentage shots and we moved the ball to the open man."

Corbin Begay scored four points to pace Many Farms.
