What was known in Tombstone for years now is official across Arizona – former Tombstone High running back Dwayne Thomas holds the state career record for rushing yardage with 6,506. Thomas had 1,848 in his senior season in 2005 and broke the record of 5,878 by Tolleson’s Marcus Thomas (no relation)..
The record is now listed as official by the Arizona Interscholastic Association.
How much longer Dwayne Thomas holds the record will depend on the next heir to the throne, Casey Jahn of Phoenix Northwest Christian.
Jahn was thought to be chasing Marcus Thomas, pulling to within 5,833 last Friday night (Sept. 9), but now has more ground to cover before setting the record. Jahn needs 674 to set the mark.
