Ganado, Many Farms garner team titles at Fighting Scouts Invite

Ganado and Many Farms nearly scored perfect team scores enroute to a championship as the Lady Hornets captured the girl's title and the Lobos took home the boy's crown at the Window Rock Fighting Scouts Cross-Country Invitational in Fort Defiance.
Ganado tallied 16 points, followed by host Window Rock with 46 points, Many Farms netted 49 points and Red Mesa posted 85 points in the girl's varsity division.
In the boy's varsity division, Many Farms scored 19 points. Window Rock followed with 44 points and Ganado settled for third place in the four-team field with 57 points. Red Mesa did not field the mandatory five runners to score.
First-year Window Rock head coach Ramsey Davidson said the athletic department wanted to host a meet for the fans.
"We wanted a meet where the fans do not have to travel far to watch talented teams and runners," Davidson said. "We had a good turnout of teams. The meet wasn't large, but it was a good meet. On October 27, we hosting the 3A North Regional Cross-Country Meet and the Northern Arizona Interscholastic Conference (NAIC) championship for middle schools. People in the area will enjoy the two meets."
Ganado runners finished first, second, third, fourth and sixth places.
Lady Hornets' Whitney James claimed the individual championship. James toured the 5K course in 21:00.2 Ganado teammate Jayla McIntosh followed in second place, touring the terrain in 21:00.8.
Lady Hornets' Marissa Smith crossed the finish line in third place, clocking a 21:13. Ganado's Kayla Beck copped fourth place, negotiating the course in 21:14. Rounding out the team scoring for Ganado was Shaunda Yazzie in sixth place, turning in a 21:18.
Window Rock's top finisher was Bayle Talkalai, who was clocked in 21:25 for seventh place. Quannah Benallie was the Lady Scouts' second finisher, crossing the finish line in ninth place, with a 21:32. Claiming 12th place was Lady Scouts' Mikayla Curley with a 22:15.
Chyler Singer, of Window Rock, settled for 15th place, posting a 23:04. Rounding out the team scoring for the Lady Scouts was Misty Begay in 17th place with a 23:56.
"The young ladies did a good job," Davidson said. "We are preparing for our next meet at the Jamboree in Rio Rancho, New Mexico next Saturday. The Jamboree is a large meet. We want to race well and put in a good showing prior to the 3A North Regional meet. We will see outstanding teams and runners at the Jamboree meet."
Two Many Farms runners finished in the top 10. Lady Lobos' Liyah Begay garnered fifth place, touring the course in 21:25. Many Farms' Latifah Curley claimed eighth place, posting a 21:25.
In the boy's varsity division, team champion Many Farms runners completed the 5K race first, second, fourth, fifth and seventh places.
Quintyler Yazzie was Many Farms' top finisher, posting a 17:30. Lobos' Ethan Tachene followed in second place with a 17:32 showing. Tywin Chee claimed fourth place, clocking a 17:57. Fifth place was garnered by Many Farms' Joseph Towne with a 18:12. Rounding out the scoring for the Lobos was Richard Campbell in seventh place, posting a 18:30.4.
Window Rock's top finisher was Josh LaFontaine in third place with a 17:39. Trey Duncan, of Window Rock, posted an 18:22 for sixth place. Fighting Scouts' Leander Charley settled for 10th place, finishing with an 18:41. Window Rock's Keevin Begay negotiated the course in 18:58 for 13th place. Rounding out the scoring for Window Rock was Jason Nelson with an 18:59 for 14th place.
"The guys are coming along," Davidson said. "Josh LaFontaine has been the team's top runner this season. I am hoping all the team members improve their times."
