After a shaky start to the third quarter, littered with quick and unforced turnovers, Estrella Foothills coach Rich Gutwein called a timeout to regroup.

“We did everything we talked about not doing at halftime,” Gutwein said, “We turned the ball over and took quick shots. The timeout was to reset, to get our composure back.”

Grant Greabell listened. The senior guard lit up the scoreboard with a flurry of threes and 15 of his 42 points to turn a six-point lead into a 79-53 rout of Dysart. The victory sent the Wolves into a 4A state tournament quarterfinal at Shadow Mountain Saturday.

 The Wolves led the Demons 35-23 at halftime, but quickly watched that lead fade in the early minutes of the second half. They watched as their turnovers led to fastbreak points for Dysart and in the blink of an eye, the lead was down to 39-33.

That’s when Gutwein called his timeout. That’s when a key player changed the game.

“You can’t guard him!” The crowd roared.

“Every time they [Dysart] had a little comeback, we were able to answer them and in the third quarter we were able to put them away.” Greabell said.

Greabell added a 10-rebound and four-assist double-double and a devastating one-two combination with center Shaun Wahlstrom provedtoo much to handle for Dysart.

Junior center Wahlstrom finished with a double-double of his own with 24 points and 11 rebounds. But it was his newfound physicality that powered down Dysart.

“Coach has been getting on me about going up strong and powering through the fouls,” Wahlstrom said, “playing as a big man instead of out by the three point line, he wanted me to have more of an impact inside of the key…..that’s my bread and butter.”

His physical play got Dysart in to foul trouble early and often but it was the shooting efficiency of the Wolves that ultimately won the game.

The Demons were playing without injured guard Elijah Childs, who averages 16 points. The Wolves, however, were prepared either way.

“They were missing a guy tonight which hurt their depth a little bit but we had prepared for them with their full roster in place,” Gutwein said.

Up next for Estrella Foothills is a matchup with nationally-ranked Shadow Mountain, a tough task for the Wolves but one they are not prepared to back down from.

“We’re going to get two great days of practice in, simulate their pressure, have a plan in place and execute.” Gutwein said. “We're going to believe we can be successful.”

Greabell added: “We just have to prepare like it’s anybody else and we can’t be afraid to play them or intimidated by them. We just need to play our game and I think we’ll be alright.”
