Game preview: Camelback vs. Carl Hayden

January 25, 2018 by Aleli Elizondo, Arizona State University

The boys basketball rivalry between Camelback and Carl Hayden has a unique twist.

The Camelback head coach graduated from Carl Hayden. Marlon Rhymes, varsity coach for the Spartans, explained how Carl Hayden coach Argie Rhymes is his uncle and former coach. Marlon Rhymes shared that he learned a lot from his coach, who is now in the Arizona High School Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame.

Now Marlon Rhymes' boys basketball team is playing against his former high school, and he is looking to come out with a win against Carl Hayden.

“If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best,” said Marlon Rhymes.

Camelback's record overall this season is 10-11. Senior Jacob Helean explained that the team needs to focus on playing strong defense in Fridays game. Carl Hayden's overall record this season is 15-6.

The Spartans hope to play good defense throughout the entire game. Senior Luis Landa-Miller thinks Friday is going to be  a tough game.

“Defense is a win win for us,” said Landa-miller.

Despite a couple of injuries that some of the Spartans had this season they managed to pull through as a team and continue to play well together.

“Step up, even though we are going through some injuries,” Marlon Rhymes said.

Carl Hayden has Isaiah Rhymes, averaging 22 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. He is a player that the Spartans are definitely looking out for.

The Spartans could try a  "box-in-one" defense against Isaiah Rhymes, said player Colton Thomas.

Marlon Rhymes likes to tell the team to “not to take the first shot but take the best shot.”

The Spartans are confident that they will come out with a win against Carl Hayden Friday.

“Run the place and get a bucket that’s it,” said Landa- Miller.
