There was a lot on the line Friday for the Queen Creek Bulldogs. They went into the game an undefeated 6-0, it was their first regional game and it was homecoming.
The Bulldogs took home the victory, defeating the Mesquite Wildcats (2-5, 0-1) by a score of 40-14 on Friday night in a 5A San Tan region matchup at Queen Creek.
Queen Creek (7-0, 1-0) had five touchdowns in the game, three of which were rushing touchdowns. The run game was led by junior Dylan Borja and senior Dante Coleman.
Coleman, running back and outside linebacker, had a 44-yard touchdown run and Borja, running back, had an 87-yard touchdown run.
The Bulldogs defense held the Wildcats to just seven points for the majority of the game, Mesquite scoring it’s second touchdown with just 22 seconds left in the game.
“[The defense] played tough tonight, it was just fun to see them fly to the football,” Queen Creek Coach Travis Schureman said. “They were playing physical football and that’s what we like to do here.”
Mesquite’s defense couldn’t stop the Bulldogs offense, and the Mesquite offense couldn’t keep up.
“We just made a few mistakes,” Mesquite coach Chad DeGrenier said. “Against a good solid football team like Queen Creek, you just can’t do that.”
The Bulldogs look to continue their win streak next week in another 5A regional matchup at Campo Verde (6-1, 2-0).
“We want to keep winning games,” Coleman said. “No one likes to lose. Losing’s not in our mentality.”
