Most of the action that matters in determining region champions for East Valley soccer teams take place today (Tuesday Jan. 24) as the 2016-2017 regular season winds to a close. A few matches rescheduled due to inclement weather last week finish the schedule on Wednesday Jan. 25.

Here are the 6A and 5A East Valley schools who have clinched region titles and the East Valley regions that must wait until play concludes this evening to crown a champ:

BOYS

REGION CHAMPS DECIDED: 6A East Valley Region -- Mesa High. 6A Central Region -- Gilbert. 5A San Tan Region: -- Campo Verde. UP FOR GRABS: 6A Premier Region -- Brophy Prep clinches region with win today over Basha.  

GIRLS

REGION CHAMPS  DECIDED: 6A East Valley Region -- Red Mountain. 6A Premier Region -- Xavier Prep. 5A San Tan Region: Campo Verde. UP FOR GRABS: 6A Central Region -- Highland clinches region title with win or tie today with Desert Ridge regardless of other results. Corona del Sol and Desert Vista still in contention should Highland lose. Loser of Desert Vista-Corona match Jan. 24 eliminated from title contention.

The final power ranking won't be determined for 6A and 5A until after Wednesday Jan. 25 matches. The pairings for 6A and 5A state tournament play-in games (Thursday Jan. 26) will be determined late Wedneday night after all results are reported and rankings computed a final time. Teams ranked 9-24 compete in the play-in games with teams 1-8 drawing a bye and automatic berth to the 16-team state tournament that begins on Jan. 31 (6A and 5A boys) and Feb. 1 (6A and 5A girls).

4A and 3A regular-season matches continue through Thursday Jan. 26. Sixteen teams from each conference qualify for state. In 4A the eight region champs earn automatic bids and the next eight teams with the best power-ranking comptete the field. In 3A the seven region champs earn automatic bids and the next nine teams with the best power-ranking comptete the field. 4A boys first-round state tournament matches are Tuesday Jan. 31. 4A girls first-round state tournament matches are Wednesday Feb. 1. 3A boys and girls first-round matches are Friday Feb. 3.
