Notre Dame football to remain on probation

The Arizona Interscholastic Association’s executive board voted 5-3 to keep Notre Dame on probation for its out of season violation during Friday’s special meeting.
The ruling will keep Notre Dame (7-2 overall record) out of this season’s playoffs. The board members who voted not to rescind the probation did so because they believed that Notre Dame’s use of football equipment during the summer, a violation, gave the team a 4-5 week advantage this season.
The board did reduce Notre Dame’s probation for its second violation, recruiting, to a 2-year warning, though. That decision was made based on the corrective action the school took this week — firing its head football coach and one-week punishments for its president and athletic director.
After the board voted not to lift the out of season probation, a representative of the Notre Dame parents, Jordan Rose of the Rose Law Group, asked Notre Dame principal Jerry Zander, who was on speaker phone, if he’d consider firing Notre Dame president James Gmelich.
Then she asked the AIA’s board if Gmelich was fired, would the board reconsider its vote.
Because Rose’s request was a personnel issue, the board went into executive session. According to the rules of order, the five board members who voted to keep Notre Dame on probation were only allowed to request a re-vote.
When the doors opened after the executive session, each of the five board members voted not to reconsider their vote. A potential third Notre Dame violation is still on the table.
The Diocese of Phoenix is looking into that matter as well as the other violations. Un update on Notre Dame’s third violation may come up at the next AIA board meeting.
