While some teams were beginning pool play Tuesday at the 2nd Annual Coyote Classic, Desert Vista put a wrap on its trio of pool-play  matches at Campo Verde High School.

Desert Vista scored three times in the opening half on the way to a methodical 3-0 victory over Chandler. The tournament features 16 boys teams and 16 girls teams with a predominantly East Valley flavor.

Desert Vista's triumph gave it a berth in the tournament's semifinals on Saturday (Dec. 12). With shutouts in each of its Pool F matches, the Thunder have a good chance of being the top seed once the other three pools yield qualifiers. If other pool winners are 3-0 they will have to post three shutouts to equal what Desert Vista has already accomplished.

Desert Vista, last season's Division I runner-up, scored its first goal in the second minute with Paige Maling connecting from about 20 yards out.  Chandler's defense got off to a sluggish start and allowed Desert Vista numerou scoring chances in the first 10 to 12 minutes.  Chandler commited a foul in the box in the seventh minute., but  dodged a 2-0 deficit when the PK by Olivia Jones was wide left.

Jones gained redemption assisting Lauren Schooler a minute later to make it 2-0. Desert Vista finished the scoring in the 39th minute with Lauren Votto drilling a shot from near the top of the box off a feed fro Izzy Deustsch.

Arguably the top two teams in Pool H -- Highland and Perry -- squared off Tuesday in Pool H  and iit ended in a 1-1 tie. Perry (0-0-1 pool play) tallied in the 32nd minute on goal by Logan VanDine. VanDine's goal came a couple seconds after her throw in. She gained possession after another touch and her high shot deflected off the hands of Highland keeper Camryn Wolfe and into the net.

Highland (1-0-1), the defending D-I champ which lost a 4-0 decision to Perry last week in a power-ranking match, produced the equalizer in the 47th minute off an indirect kick by Ashlyn Lovell. Perry was called for a pass back in its box and Lovell converted the ensuing indrect kick from eight yards out through an all-out blitz of defenders charging from the goal mouth.

In the other girls tournament match played Tuesday, Basha defeated Mesa Mountain View, 3-0. Boys tournament results on Tuesday - Higley 1,  Mountain View 0:, South Mountain 6, Dobson 2; Campo Verde 4, Central 0 and Highland 3, Perry 1.
