The United States opened play Wednesday at the FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Argentina with a 105-54 thrashing of Puerto Rico.

Led by 19 points from Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) rising junior guard Markus Howard, the USA improved to 16-0 in the event dating back to 2009. Head coach Don Showalter has seen his team top the 100-point mark in 13 of those outings.

Five other Americans scored in double figures against Puerto Rico, including Wendell Carter Jr. (15 points), Kevin Knox II (15), Gary Trent Jr. (12), Jordan Brown (11) and Jalen Hill (11).

Victory Prep (Houston) junior Jarred Vanderbilt put together a nice all-around performance with 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals to go along with seven points.

The United States meets the Dominican Republic in its second outing Thursday.
