D-I boys hoops: Corona captures 4th trip in a row to final, tops Chaparral

Top-seed Corona del Sol had to break out the heavy armour to repel the latest attack on its bid to reach the Division I basketball title game for a fourth year in a row. On Saturday night it was fifth-seeded Chaparral's turn and it meant solid offensive efforts for the Aztecs from four players instead of the normal three. Whatever it takes this time of the season.

Alex Barcello, Marvin Bagley III and Dane Kuiper were joined in a double-figure, scoring parade by senior and three-time state champ Cassius Peat in turning back the game Firebirds, 79-70, in a semifinal at Grand Canyon University Arena.

Corona del Sol  (31-1-) gets a rematch with Desert Vista in Monday's 8 p.m. title game at Gila River Arena. Desert Vista rallied in the fourth period to elminate Mesa Mountain View in the other semifinal. Corona and DV met in late January with Corona pulling away late for the win. Chaparral wrapped up a stellar season at 26-6.

Peat, an integral part of the 2012, 2013 and 2014 title teams, attacked the basket with vigor in this one to the tune of 16 points. His size and strength was often too much to handle for Chaparral, who had its hands full with Barcello (24 points), Bagley III (19 points) and Kuiper (14 points). Perhaps Peat is extra motivated to get a fourth ring. Whatever the reason, he helped begin Corona's comeback from Chaparral's explosive first quarter from the periimeter.

"Cassius was huge tonight," Corona del Sol coach Sammy Duane Jr. said. "That's four years of experience. He was outstanding."

Corona trailed 23-18 after the first period thanks to a dazzling three-point shooting quarter from Chaparral. Colten Kresl and Kenzo Nudo combined for five threes in the quarter -- all three of Kresl's were in succession that bumped Chaparral ahead 15-12. Nudo tallied a game-high 27 points on the floor he'll call home next years. Kresl added 18 points.

"They shot extremely well," Duane said. "We missed some assignments early, but in the second half we were able to string together some stops. They cooled off a litltle, but Nudo was still making them. He's a special player."

Peat made aggressive moves to the basket in the second period, resulting in nine points and the Aztecs catching Chaparral by intermission at 34. Kresl and Nudo managed another three apiece in the second period. The treys became fewer in the second half. Corona took advantage outscoring the Firebirds 19-11 in the quarter for a 53-45 lead  with eight minutes left.

Corona's lead stayed between eight and 11 most of the final period, but did slip to 69-64 with 125 left after the second of three long threes in the period by Nudo. Corona made 12 of 14 free throws in the quarter as Chaparral tried to get the game to below two possessions. Corona put an exclamation point  on the win with a Bagley III stuff with about 20 seconds left. It was initiated by a Kuiper steal,  pass to Barcello who passed up a layup to feed Bagley III high above the rim to give the crowd a going-away present.

DESERT VISTA 49, MESA MTN. VIEW 41: The seventh-seeded Thunder (26-4) outscored the No. 3 Toros (24-8), 20-10, in the final period to reach the D-I finals for the first time since winning the title in 2008.

Caleb Simmons scored nine of his 15 points in the final period as Desert Vista regrouped from a tough third period that saw Mountain View overcome an early 10-point deficit. Desert Vista trailed 31-29 heading to the final period after Mountain View found its shooting touch with three threes in the third period -- all from guard Tommy Kuhse. Kuhse was blanked in the first half and didn't score in the final period to finish with nine points.

Desert Vista outscored Mountain View 11-3 over the final 3 1/2 minutes. Brandon Clarke scored six of his 13 points in the final quarter and Tarik Cool capped a 13-point game floating in the lane for two to that made the game a two-possession contest with less than a minute to play.

Zane Jowaiszas led Mountain View with 12 points in a reserve role. Eight of his points came in the second quarter and helped rescue the Toros from a 16-6 deficit.
