Highland and Campo Verde made the city of Gilbert proud in 2012 and 2013, respectively, by claiming Division I and Division III girls soccer championships. The sister schools will be at again this weekend trying to make 2015 twice as nice.

Both schools went to extra time to reach title matches in semifinal bouts Wednesday night. No. 11 Campo Verde dethroned defending D-II champ and No. 2 seed Verrado after the teams played to scoreless tie through two overtime periods. Campo Verde prevailed in a shootout, 3-1. Goalkeeper Amanda Canzona made two saves and nearly a third in the shootout to highlight Campo Verde's victory.

Campo Verde (17-5-2) faces No. 1 Notre Dame Prep (15-0-6), which knocked off No. 5 Catalina Foothills in a shootout, 4-3. Notre Dame and Catalina Foothills were scoreless through regulation and two overtimes. Both D-II semis were played at Williams Field High School. Campo Verde and Notre Dame Prep compete in the same section. Notre Dame won their meeting in the regular season, 2-0. Campo Verde and Notre Dame Prep play for the title on Saturday (Feb. 14) at 10 a.m. at Campo Verde HS.

Campo Verde coach Rosie Headley has been confident this postseason her team could make its way to the final, even as the No. 11 seed. Three of its five losses were to Division I schools another was to Notre Dame Prep.

"We knew Verrado was very fast, and we were prepared for that," Headley said. "It was an even match. Usually there's more success when you get to penalty kicks."

After the first three rounds of kicks, Campo Verde led 1-0. Its top scorer, Sebrina Rodriguez, converted on the first PK of the shootout. Verrado missed its first and then the keepers stood out. Verrado keepr Shea Smith stopped Campo Verde's second attempt and Canzona made saves on the next two sent her way by Verrado. Campo Verde missed its third attempt.

Campo Verde put the pressure on Verrado as Kathryn Fox connected for a 2-0 advantage. Verrado's Hallie Shippy kept the Ladyu Vipers alive -- barely. Her shot was deflected by Canzona, but it spu through Canzona's grasp and just breeched the goal mouth to make it 2-1.

Canzona took Campo Verde's fifth kick and was successful. Camp Verde was ready then to celebrate, but the referee delayed signaling the match over, as he went over his score card. After about 15 seconds, he gave the signal the match was over.

No. 4 Highland (23-2-1) made its D-I championship reservation with a 1-0 overtime win over No. 1 seed Desert Mountain (18-2-2) at Campo Verde HS. Highland senior Bri Hatch tallied the game-winner with five minutes gone in the first overtime. Hatch, who leads the team with 20 goals, worked her way through three defenders and got off a shot through traffic from about 10 yards out. It had enough mustard on it to zip past Desert Mountain keeepr Sophia Lettieri. Hatch was engulfed in a sea of teammates at the point she made the kick.

Highland's opponent in the finals is No. 3 Desert Vista (18-3-1). Desert Vista ended No. 15 Chandler's run at a title-game berth with a 2--0 victory. Desert Vista scored a goal in each half to send the Lady Wolves packing. Lauren Votto scored in the opening half for the Lady Thunder and Tatum Heeres tallied in the second half. Desert Vista and Highland split two matches this season. Desert Vista prevailed 1-0 and Highland took the other, 2-1. Highland and Desert Vista play for the championship on Saturday (Feb. 14) at 4 p.m. at Campo Verde HS.
