A strange prep sports Monday of action
December 13, 2010 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365
Monday night prep football is a rarity in Arizona, but due to scheduling logistics the last two football games of the 2010 season go off today at University of Phoenix Stadium.
If you didn't know already, two-time defending champion Hamilton tangles with Desert Ridge for teh 5A-I crown at 4 p.m. followed at 8 p.m. by the 5A-II title match between defending champ Chaparral and Centennial.
There are also a couple good 5A boys basketball games set for today. Unbeaten Mesa Mountain View and once-beaten Corona del Sol open up 5A Central Region play at Corona del Sol at 7 p.m. There's a pretty decent non-region clash at Horizon with Horizon taking on Desert Vista, also at 7 p.m.
This is an odd week for games with schools engrossed in final exams so normal sports scheduling patterns aren't the rule. By the weekend it will be time for invitationals again with the largest invite in Chandler. Chandler hosts the annual Nike Tournament of Champions I girls basketball tournament. which start Saturday Dec. 18. The tournament continues Monday Dec. 20 through Wednesday Dec. 22. There are smaller basketball invitationals around the Valley that will begin on Thursday or Friday as well as soccer and wrestling. More on some of those later.
