Competitive week of soccer for EV schools at Diablo Classic

December 6, 2010 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

The pressure is off a bit but the competition will be fierce today through Saturday at the annual Diablo Soccer Tournament at the Tempe Sports Complex.

Twenty boys teams and 16 girls teams lineup for at least three games and as many as six. Games do not count in the power-point rankings so that does not play with the minds of coaches, but teams want to prevail just the same as it gives an early indication of where the power may be, particularly in 5A-I.

Schools entered on the boys side by pool are: Pool A - Hamilton, Highland, Campo Verde and Chaparral; Pool B - Corona del Sol, Marcos de Niza, Mountain View, Westwood; Pool C - Mesa, Perry, Gilbert, Red Mountain; Pool D - Mountain Pointe, Basha, Desert Mountain, Chandler; Pool E - Mesquite, Dobson, Desert Vista and Williams Field.

Corona del Sol is the defending 5A-I boys champ, Hamilton last year's runner-up and Gilbert a semifinalist a year ago.

Schools competing on the girls side by pool are: Pool A - Corona del Sol, Dobson, Red Mountain, Mountain Pointe; Pool B - Mesquite, Millennium, Mountain View, Desert Vista; Pool C - Highland, Chandler, Basha, Desert Mountain; Pool D - Perry, Marcos de Nia, Hamilton, Gilbert.

Corona del Sol was last year's 5A-I girls runner-up, Desert Mountain last year's 5A-II champ and Highland and Desert Vista 5A-I semifinalists.

Matches take place Monday through Wednesday at 4, 6 and 8 p.m.

With 20 teams in the boys field, the five pool winners and three wild card teams will comprise the final eight teams. Quarterfinal matches are all on Thursday at 4 p.m. The semifinals are Friday at 6 and the title match is Saturday at 11 a.m.

The 16-team girls field qualifies the top two teams in each pool for Thursday's quarterfinals. Quarterfinals on Thursday are all at 6 p.m. The semifinals are Friday at 6 p.m. and the championship match Saturday at 11 a.m.

A schedule of pool games today through Wednesday is available at mesasports.org by clicking on boys or girls next to the title Diablo Soccer. The Tempe Sports Complex is located at the intersection of Warner and Hardy adjacent to the Arizona Cardinals training facility.
