Boys and girls title game facts and figures for 2012-2013

Eight basketball championships will be settled Saturday in the state's four diviisions -- boys and girls.

Here are some tidbits about each school's history in pursuit of those titles:

DIVISION I BOYS: Pinnacle vs. Corona del Sol -- This is Pinnacle's first ever title-game appearance. Pinnacle opened in 2000. Corona del Sol is shooting for back-to-back titles under coach Sammy Duane Jr. The Aztecs have won five state titles overalll. The other four cam in 1980, 1981, 1989 and 1994 under Sammy Duane Jr.'s father, Sam Duane Sr. Corona has been runners-up six times

PREVIOUS MEETING THIS SEASON: Corona 69, Pinnacle 65.

DIVISION I GIRLS: Pinnacle vs. St. Mary's -- Pinnacle is no stranger to state title games. The Lady Pioneers are, however, strangers to winning that first title. This will be there sixth title game appearance -- all in the last seven years. They have been runner-up each time 2007 (4A), 2008-2011 (5A-II). St. Mary's is going for its third straight title under coach Curtis Ekmark and seventh overall (1992, 1993, 2004, 2006, 2011 and 2012. The Lady Knightso ther four came with Frank Denogean at the helm.

PREVIOUS MEETING THIS SEASON: St. Mary's 63, Pihnnacle 43

DIVISION II BOYS: Salpointe vs, Paradise Valley -- Salpointe's never won a boys title and last played for one in 1999 when the Lancers lost to Mesa Mtn/ View. Paraidise Valley has won one title, 1995 under coach Bill Farrell. The Tojans have been runner-up twice, once under present coach Mark MacGowan. a PV alum.

PREVIOUS MEETING THIS SEASON: None.

DIVISION II GIRLS: Saguaro vs. Flowing Wells -- Saguaro has not won a girls crown The Lady Sabercats finished runner-up in 1998 and 2006 under Brent Carter. Flowing Wells has often been a contender and won its only state crown in 2008.  The Lady Cabs were runner-up in 1985, 1993 and 2006.

PREVIOUS MEETING THIS SEASON: None.

DIVISION III BOYS: Valley Christian vs. Gilbert Christian -- Valley Christian has been to the mountain top four times, winning in 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2007 under current coach Greg Haagsma. Gilbert Christian is looking for back-to-back titles and a third in four years. Overalll  the Knights have four titles to their credit -- one under their old name Surrey Garden in 2007.

PREVIOUS MEETING THIS SEASON: Gilbert Christian has won three time --  63-58, 65-59 and 76-65.

DIVISION III GIRLS: Winslow vs. Valley Sanders -- Tradition-rich Winslow is gunning for its eighth state title -- most of any of today's combatants. The Bulldogs have eight runner-up trophies as well.  All seven preivious tites were under the tutelage of the state's winningest girls coach -- now retired Don Petranovich. Those came in 1989, 1990, 1996, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010. Current coach Jerrron Jordan goes for his first today. Valley Sanders has never won a girls title, but was runner-up in 1977 and 1980, the very early days of girls basketball in the state.

PREVIOUS MEETING THIS SEASON: Winslow has won twice -- 68-55 and 59-44.

DIVISION IV BOYS: Joy Christian vs. Arizona Lutheran -- Joy Christian is playing in its first title game having opened in the last four years. Arizona Lutheran has one state title, captured in 1999. under present coach Doug Meyer. Arizona Lutherna has been runner-up four times.

PREVIOUS MEETING THIS SEASON: Joy Christian 67, Arizona Lutheran 59.

DIVISION IV GIRLS: Salt River vs. Tempe Prep -- Tempe Prep goes for back-to-back titles today. It won under current coach Nancy Calahan last year. Salt River, coached by Shawn Lytle goes for its second title, having won in 2010 plus a runner-up finish in 2007.

PREVIOUS MEETING THIS SEASON: Salt River has won three times -- 50-34, 50--48, and 51-47.
