Recap - Highland at Mountain View (Mesa)

October 12, 2012 by Game Previews, AZPreps365

Mountain View (Mesa) grabbed the lead on the first offensive play of the game Friday night and never relinquished it en route to a 28-14 home victory over Highland on Senior Night.

Junior quarterback John Clark tossed a screen pass to junior wideout Robbie Milward, who raced 77 yards for a score just 21 seconds into the contest. The Hawks responded later in the quarter with a five-yard touchdown run from junior fullback Grant Gale. But Mountain View answered back with a 20-yard TD strike from Clark to junior wide receiver Hansen Williams on a stop-and-go route. Clark would hit A.J. Montalvo on a slant route late in the second quarter, and the senior receiver would race 50 yards into the end zone for a 21-6 halftime lead. Clark amassed 185 yards in the air in the first half for the Toros and now has 14 TD passes for the season.

Highland, who was missing its top tailback due to an injury sustained in last week's 34-32 upset win over previously-unbeaten Desert Mountain, managed to march down to the Mountain View 9-yard line midway through the third quarter. But a fumble on a handoff was recovered by Toros' junior defensive back Conner Ipsen, and the Hawks would not get another first down until 3:38 remaining in the game

Mountain View's only rushing TD of the night came in the fourth quarter on a two-yard plunge by Cayman Nielsen one play after the junior running back scampered 50 yards on a sweep. The Hawks would add a late score on a five-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Blake Young to junior wide receiver Jake Brown on a fade route. Young, who was sacked multiple times by the Toros' defense in the second half, then found Gale for a two-point conversion pass

Mountain View improves to 6-2 on the season and notches its sixth straight victory. The Toros finish the season with a home game next week against Mountain Pointe followed by a road game at Mesa. Highland, who slips to 5-3, plays its final two regular season games at home against Mesa next Friday and Red Mountain on October 26.
