Perry at Basha

October 11, 2012 by Game Previews, AZPreps365

A couple of teams looking to solidify their power rankings and get some momentum in the final weeks of the regular season face off in south Chandler on Friday night.

Basha (5-2) is 11th in power points in Division I but coming off a big loss to Mesa Desert Ridge 48-28 last week. The Bears need to get back on the winning track and get some momentum going into a week 9 meeting with powerhouse Chandler Hamilton.

A semifinalist last season,, Basha has found success this year with its passing game, led by junior quarterback Zach Werlinger, who has thrown for 1,904 yards and 22 touchdowns. Rajhan Meriwether is averaging more than 100 yards rushing a game but also has six fumbles this season.

On the other side is Gilbert Perry (5-2), eighth in power points in Division II, but four of its wins have come against Division III schools. The Pumas do have an impressive 48-21 road win over Yuma Gila Ridge but could improve their power ranking resume with a win over Division I Basha, as it did a year ago.

Perry, a state quarterfinalist last year, primarily runs the ball and has scored a bunch of points, averaging 35.4 a game this season but hasn’t faced a big school in 2012. The Pumas finish the year with Phoenix Goldwater and Tempe McClintock, who have three wins combined so this is Perry’s chance to make some noise.
