Brophy Beats Westview For Fourth Straight Win
October 7, 2012 by Game Previews, AZPreps365
The Brophy Broncos kept up their winning ways as they knocked off Westview, 35-21, Friday night in a huge Division I matchup in Avondale. Both teams entered the contest riding winning streaks, but it was the sixth-seeded Broncos that would keep theirs alive.
Brophy (6-2) jumped on the board early as Marche Dennard ran in from 40 yards out just 54 seconds into the game. Westview (5-2) answered right back, however, with a 36 yard TD pass from Kordell Provchy to Isaiah Burks just over two minutes later.
Clarence Clark had a 13 yard TD run early in the second quarter, but Westview's Seivion Morris blocked the extra point to make it 13-7. After shutting down the Knights, Devon Allen returned the punt 37 yards down to the Westview four-yard line, setting up Dennard's second TD run of the night that pushed the Broncos lead to 20-7 with 7:55 to go before halftime.
On the ensuing possession, Provchy finished off a 75-yard drive with the first of two rushing touchdowns, bringing the 19th-seeded Knights within six with 1:53 left. The drive spanned six minutes and two seconds, but it left enough time for Tyler Bruggman and the Broncos. Just three plays into the next drive, Bruggman found Clark and the senior scampered 59 yards to make it 27-14 at the half.
Arizona State head football coach Todd Graham watched the first half of this game from the Brophy sidelines. There was plenty of D-I talent all over the field including Allen, who is being recruited by ASU, UCLA and Stanford.
The Knights came out strong after the break, going 82 yards on 15 plays. Provchy capped it off with his second rushing score to make it 27-21. The drive ate up 10 minutes and 21 seconds of the third quarter and gave Westview tons of momentum.
Brophy's next possession would stall out at the Westview 45, forcing a punt. The Knights had a chance to take the lead and had 90 yards in front of them, but Provchy was picked off for the second time of the night at midfield by Zach Kotoske with 3:25 to play.
The Broncos then marched down the field as Bruggman found Dennard for a 9-yard TD that put the Broncos up 35-21 with just 1:53 left. A controversial fumble by Provchy in the final two minutes would seal the win for Brophy. It appeared Provchy's arm was going forward on a pass but it was ruled a fumble.
Bruggman finished 11-of-18 for 202 yards and the two TDs for the Broncos, who have won four straight and will likely move into the top-five in the D-I seedings. Dennard ended with 97 total yards and three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving. Brophy battles St. Mary's (3-4) this Friday.
Provchy ended just 5-of-12 for 74 yards and also had 30 yards rushing on 13 carries, but had the three costly turnovers. Morris had 18 touches for 129 yards for the Knights, who had their five-game winning streak snapped. Westview racked up over 250 rushing yards as a team but that was far less than the 350-yard average the Knights had coming into the contest. They will look to get back in the win column at Carl Hayden (3-4) this week.

Side Note: Some may remember hearing about the Far West Jets Pop Warner football team over the last few years. They won two straight Pop Warner National Championships in Florida in 2009 and 2010, and then lost in the title game last year. The Jets became the first Arizona team ever to go to the Pop Warner National Finals. Well, about a dozen or so of those kids are now playing at Brophy and Westview. Most are sophomore's and freshmen, so look for both of these programs to continue to be contenders in Division I for years to come.
