Volleyball: New stat page, playoff schedule, seedings
October 2, 2012 by Jose Garcia, AZPreps365
Keeping stats for football is easier since teams only play once a week.
But keeping track of stats for other team sport — such as volleyball — that play multiple games during a week is a job in itself. Coaches already have their hands full with other chores during a season.
Or some coaches just don’t want to reveal their stats to their opponents. But a good percentage of the volleyball coaches are so far regularly updating their stats on their Maxpreps page.
That information can now be viewed on the aia365.com’s leaderboard page as well as on Maxpreps. Some of the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s sports have state record books, but others don’t.
But Maxpreps is working on a state record book that will keep track annually of the state’s statistical record holders for almost every sport. The AIA also will continue to update the record books it first started.
Horizon still in the lead
It might not be the No. 1 team in the aia365.com’s seedings in Division I, but there’s no doubt that Horizon’s volleyball team is the top team in the state regardless of division.
The team has yet to drop a match to an Arizona team and recently finished fifth at the prestigious Durango tournament in Las Vegas, where Horizon (22-2) suffered its only two losses of the season. A handful of Arizona teams will get their shot this week to knock Horizon off its perch (ranked No. 14 by Maxpreps nationally) before the stretch run of the season begins for volleyball next week.
The Goldwater tournament, the final big regular season tournament of the season, begins on Friday, and the winner of Saturday’s final will head into the final weeks of the regular season with a lot of momentum.
