Rio Rico wins the Nymeyer Classic

No. 17 Rio Rico went 6-0 to capture the championship of the Ed Nymeyer Classic held Friday and Saturday at Amphitheater and Flowing Wells High School. Nymeyer is a Hall of Fame coach who has the distinction of winning 300 games with two sports at Flowing Wells. He led the boys basketball team to state championships in 1962 and 1967 and the girls volleyball team to a state title in 1991. He also led the boys basketball team to a runner-up finish in 1968 and the girls basketball team to a runner-up finish in 1984.
Rio Rico (10-3 in ranking matches) beat No. 24 Walden Grove (7-6) in pool play and in the championship match, where the Hawks came back to beat the Red Wolves in three sets (17-25, 25-11, 15-9). No. 12 Sahuarita beat No. 17 Desert Christian (25-14, 25-14) to take third place and No. 40 Amphitheater beat No. 46 Cholla (25-17, 25-21) to win the Silver Bracket. Desert Christian competes in the 2A Conference while Rio Rico, Walden Grove, Amphitheater and Cholla are all 4A programs.
