CAMP VERDE — Jase Seekens had three touchdown catches and an interception on defense, Justin Smith had three scores and No. 6-ranked Camp Verde won their seventh straight with a 50-0 win over Chino Valley on a rainy Friday night.

With the Cowboys sporting one of the few all-grass football fields left in the region, the turf was in surprisingly good shape after heavy rains had drenched northern Arizona for much of the last 24 hours.

It certainly didn’t slow down Camp Verde’s offensive attack, which came into Friday night’s contest having outscored their last six opponents 272-51 and now sets up a potential 2A Metro 3 region championship game at Scottsdale Christian next week.

“We started off this week like we were coming to win for Scottsdale Christian. We started off on that, we played well. This game is a start for what we need [to prepare] for Scottsdale Christian,” Seekens said.

Smith, a junior, said the Cowboys (7-1, 4-0 2A Metro 3) need to stay focused this coming week and keep “loving each other” in preparation for No. 3 Scottsdale Christian.

“I’m going to run as hard as I can until my legs are broken,” Smith said with a big smile when asked if he can have the same type of game against Scottsdale Christian as he did against the Cougars.

Smith started the game off with a 23-yard touchdown run to put the Cowboys up 7-0 with 8:43 to play in the first quarter. The standout tailback then scored again on an 11-yard run after Chase Dugan blocked a punt and Camp Verde recovered at their opponent’s 15-yard line.

The rout was on with 4 seconds left in the first quarter as quarterback Brayden Walsworth found Seekens on a 1-yard touchdown pass, making it 21-0.

Later in the second period, Walsworth found Seekens again with 9:55 to play in the second quarter on a 22-yard toss to make it 28-0 and the Cowboys wouldn’t look back.

Walsworth, a senior, came into Friday’s game having completed 115 of 179 passes for 1,232 yard and 17 touchdowns to just one interception.

All eyes will be on Saturday’s matchup between No. 2-ranked Phoenix Christian and No. 3 Scottsdale Christian, which is set for 7 p.m.

Chino Valley (4-4, 1-3 2A Metro 3), which has lost three straight since starting the season 4-1, wraps up the regular season at home against Fountain Hills before entering the newly formed “2A Region Crossover” format, which pairs regions to play against each other in a No. 1 versus No. 1, No. 2 versus No. 2 and so on.

For example, Camp Verde is in the Metro 3 region, which is paired with the Metro 2 region this season. If the regular season ended today, the Cowboys as the second-place team would play at Parker, which is the second-place team in Metro 2.

This was done to create a more balanced and competitive Week 10 schedule among 2A schools, which in football, can sometimes see a top-heavy group that dominates the rest of the league.

Camp Verde is scheduled to play at Scottsdale Christian (7-0, 4-0 2A Metro 3) on Friday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
