GOODYEAR – Perry High School and host Millennium battled to a tie Thursday afternoon in a three-team match at Wigwam Golf Club’s Blue Course. Both the Pumas and the Tigers finished with a team score of 11-over-par on the par-36 layout, while American Leadership Academy - Gilbert North (ALA) placed third with a team score of 24-over-par.

Senior Luke Tomkins led the way for Perry, shooting a 2-over-par 38. Tomkins highlighted his round with an eagle on the par-5 third hole and added four pars to steady his scorecard.

“I was playing good, it just came down to my putting,” Tomkins said. “I made a 25-foot (putt) for eagle and felt pretty good going after that.”

Playing Wigwam’s Blue Course for the first time, Tomkins faced plenty of obstacles. A stiff downwind breeze made it tough to control shots and hold the greens, but he adjusted quickly. Relying on his steady driving, Tomkins kept himself in position throughout the round and emerged as a leader for the Pumas.

Fellow senior Brock Wright matched Tomkins at 2-over-par 38. Wright posted a birdie on hole six and strung together five pars to contribute key consistency to Perry’s tight matchup.

Behind the top two, Perry also received important depth scoring. Sophomore Isaiah Yi added 3-over-par 39 with two birdies while freshman Matthew Van Dyke and junior Caden Mendonca finished with a 4-over-par 40.

Coach Scott Uyeshiro highlighted the Pumas’ lineup depth as a strength and is excited to see it continue developing in the years ahead.

“It was nice to see the future of the program out there today,” Uyeshiro said. “I look towards the future thinking about how they’re going to help this team down the road.”

Millennium’s charge was led by freshman Nolan Wilson, who hit for par every hole to pace the Tigers. Wilson was backed by three teammates who each shot 4-over-par 40 and another who finished 3-over-par 39. ALA also found a bright spot in junior Jack Gardner, who nearly matched Wilson’s steadiness by shooting par on every hole but one, carrying much of the load for the Eagles.

Uyeshiro praised his entire roster for stepping up, highlighting the younger players and those who don’t always see the lineup. He acknowledged that the team, including Tomkins, has shown some inconsistencies this season, but said Thursday's performance was an encouraging step forward as they enter the final stretch before the state tournament.

“I was excited for (Luke),” Uyeshiro said. “He was a bit inconsistent earlier on but his eagle made me smile because it made him smile. It’s not every day that someone will get an eagle, so that was nice.”

Uyeshiro mentioned that going into the back stretch of this season, they are going to peak at the right time. With a second-place finish at the state tournament last year, Uyeshiro is hoping to stay up in the standings with a top-five finish this time around.

The Pumas will look to build on this victory in their final three matches before the state tournament. Next up, Perry will travel north for the Peaks Invitational at Continental Country Club in Flagstaff, on  Oct. 3-4.
