Although the elite bracket was won by an out-of-state school, powerful La Jolla (Calif.) Country Day, girls volleyball players from seven Arizona schools (eight in all) were selected to the 21-member, all-tournament team at last weekend's Nike Tournament of Champions girls volleyball tournament held in Chandler, Gilbert and Tempe.
Sunnyslope outside hitter Madison Kingdon and teammate and setter Heidi Thompson were selected from the Vikings squad that finished third in the elite Platinum Division. Also chosen were Hamilton libero Alexa Saba (the Huskies were fourth in the Platinum Division); Desert Vista outside hitter McKella Williams, Seton Catholic outside hitter Haley Lawless, Corona del Sol setter Cassie Fish, Centennial setter Dana Gundrum and Thatcher outside hitter Rachel Orr. There was plenty of competition for those spots with 56 teams in all participating.
Team champions from Arizona in other divisions at the Nike TOC were Highland (Silver), Northwest Christian (Bronze) and Desert Ridge (Diamond).
