PRESCOTT — Daylen Sharper led Brophy with 27 points, but teammate Luke Weiskamp turned out to be the star of the show after he found himself all alone underneath the rim for a buzzer-beater layup to give the Broncos a 70-68 overtime victory Wednesday night.
The 6-foot-6 senior was wide open for at least a few seconds, stating that he stayed cool the entire time, just waiting for his opportunity to shine.
“Yeah, I was ready for it. They triple-teamed Daylen, so I had the open shot,” said Weiskamp, who scored 12 points for No. 17-seeded Brophy, which now advances to the second round of the Open State Championship.

Weiskamp’s heroics in the end certainly didn’t overshadow Sharper’s effort for Brophy (15-10, 4-4 6A Central) as the 6-foot-4 junior had 13 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, including a big 3-pointer at the end of the third to spark a 9-0 run right after Prescott had taken their first lead of the night.
That lead came from Badger standout Uriah Tenette, who hit a 3-pointer with 45 seconds to go in the third period to put his club up 40-39. The senior UC-San Diego commit scored 46 on the night, 24 of which came in the fourth quarter and overtime.
“He’s a hell of a player. He had a lot of points, and he destroyed our defense,” Sharper said of Tenette. “But at the end we made a few defensive stops, trusted each other and kept our head down and played hard the whole game. That’s what led us to be victorious.”
With 1:14 left in regulation, Tenette drove to the basket and knocked down a tough shot while being fouled, converting the three-point play to give Prescott a 58-57 lead, but Sharper came right back and got an And-1 of his own, making it 60-58 with 1:05 to play.
In overtime, Tenette, who was 14 for 14 from the charity stripe on the night, hit two more to tie the game 68-68 with 13 seconds left, but Weiskamp was in the right place at the right time for the victory.
“It was a fun game to watch if you’re a fan for sure. But I can tell you, I’ll head down to the locker room and the faces won’t show the same as what’s up here,” Prescott coach Travis Stedman said, adding that Brophy deserves credit for their resiliency.
“They hit big shot after big shot. We’d hit them with a gut punch, and they’d come back and knock down a three. We’d take the lead, they’d come down and get an And-1,” Stedman said. “They answered everything we had. When we get it to overtime, it was fitting the way it ended, let’s just put it that way.”
Zane Gaul had 11 points and likely 15-plus rebounds for Prescott, which didn’t have another player on the roster score more than four points.
