The Catalina Foothills girls earned the 13th state championship in program history since 2000 with a 463.5 to 440 win over Desert Mountain. This was the first state championship for head coach Tamara Brandhuber, who was also named Division II Coach of the Year. Nicole Sayers-Penkalski led the Falcons to six straight titles from 2000 to 2005 to set the tone.
On the D-II boy’s side, Desert Mountain beat Catalina Foothills 440 to 407 to win the fourth title in program history dating back to 2005. Catalina Foothills standout Kyle Dowe won three gold medals (100 Breast, 200 IM and 200 Medley Relay) and he earned D-II Swimmer of the Year honors.
“It was a fun experience and a great team effort from all members of the team,” Dowe said. “It was great to see our boys take second and the girls take first. It had also been a goal of mine to win swimmer of the year so it was a great feeling to accomplish that. All in all, it was a great way to finish my high school swimming career.”
Individually, Amber Janky paced Catalina Foothills with four gold medals (50 Free, 200 IM, 200 Free Relay and 400 Free Relay).
