Queen Creek does the pounding in avenging loss to A.J.

Last season in their 4A-I  Desert Sky battle, Apache Junction chewed up Queen Creek at the line of scrimmage rushing for 480 yards and giving up only 56 yards on the ground in a 52-14 win over the Bulldogs. That grinding out of real estate came after Queen Creek grabbed a quick 14-0 lead in the first period against the Prospectors.

The outcome Friday night was reversed in slightly different fashion.

Displaying a balanced and highly-efficient attack, Queen Creek scored the first six times it had the ball and on seven of eight possessions overall to hand Apache Junction its worst defeat of the season, 48-10, on Senior Night at Apache Junction.

As a result Queen Creek (7-1, 2-0) remains unbeaten in region play and extended its winning streak to five games as it negotiates a slate of region games, which brings Cactus Shadows and Saguaro to Queen Creek the next two weeks to put wrap up the regular season. Queen Creek entered the game second in 4A-I in the power-point rankings. The Bulldogs figure to stay right behind Canyon del Oro, the only  team the Bulldogs have lost to this season, when the new rankings show up on Monday.

"We were happy with the effort from beginning to end,"  Queen creek coach Joe Germaine said. "I think we played a complete game in all phases."

As a former quarterback, Germaine had to love what he saw, particularly on offense. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-0 lead early in the second period before Apache Junction (5-4, 1-2) got its only points of the night on a 41-yard field goal by David Gamboa with 4:12 left ihn the second period. The 20-3 lead jumped to 34-3 by halftime. Drives of 70, 73, 65, 65 and 50 yards were crisp. Running back Chim Nga scored two of this three TDs in the opening half and finished with 139 yards on 18 carries. Nga sat out the final quarter and half.

Quarterback Adam Brzeczek was part of the other three, tossing two touchdown passes to wide out Todd Kirchner and tallying on a 1-yard sneak with nine seconds left before intermission. Brzeczek completed 9-of-10 passes for 175 yards for the game. In the first half he was 8-of-9 for 127 yards. The lone incompletion was a drop.

"Our goal every game is to score on every possession," Brzeczek said. "Our line did a great job blocking, and  our defense stepped it up because they run the ball well. We had a great game plan. It came down to executing. I think we did a good job at that."

Queen Creek totaled 466 yards (291 rushing and 175 through the air). They limited Apache Junction to 102 yards rushing through three quarters. AJ rushed for 80 yards on its final possession of the game to make the final numbers look somewhat close. (AJ totaled 264 for the contest).

"We try to be balanced on offense," Germaine said. "We focus on execution, and what I saw was really good. We may look at the film tomorrow and find some things, but I'm really pleased. The defense shut the door on them, and it's not an easy offense to defend."
