The Campo Verde Coyotes defeated the McClintock Chargers, 31-0, in Mesa at McClintock High School.
Campo Verde is now 9-4 overall. All the victories have come by shutouts.
The Coyotes freshman wide receiver Kayla Dayton scored the game-winning touchdown to seal the game.
The Chargers could not convert any touchdowns with Coyotes lockdown defense all game. Senior running back/defensive back/wide receiver Rhiana Gurnani and junior wide receiver/linebacker Serena DeRosa accounted for many stops.
The first quarter ended 7-0, with the Coyotes being the first and only team on the board. Freshman wide receiver and defensive back Oakley Dobratz-Blevins scored the touchdown. The Chargers had no answer for the Coyotes offense.
Junior quarterback Isabella Pap made her presence known on and off the field. She threw for 274 passing yards, including three touchdowns. She was a vocal leader on the sidelines, cheering her teammates on. She attributes her parents to ensuring she is always engaged during the game.
“If I can’t make that impact - (like) I want to on the field - I’m going to make it on the sideline and try to lift these girls up and have them fill the role that I’m not filling right now,” Pap said.
The Coyotes’ defense was tough all game.
This game was a team win. Freshman running back/defensive back Miriam Edgeston had two carries for 25 yards. She also attributed many stops in the fourth quarter to keep the game scoreless.
Freshman wide receiver and defensive back Ella Mutters had four receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns. She added an interception on special teams.
Senior Veronika Hutchings closed out a phenomenal kicking day. She converted all four extra-point kicks and made a field goal at the end of the first half to extend the score to 17-0.
Senior Maddie Coger had two blocked punts and two interceptions. Her two blocked punts energized her team, allowing them to convert on the offense.
“If a kick is an extra point or if a punt is block able, then it gives me a bit of confidence,” said Coger. “Once I line up, it can be scary, especially since the McClintock punter steps up to the line.”
The Coyotes will finish their season possibly not having any home games.
“If we get it, we get it," Coyotes head coach Brian Coger said, "if not, we’ll just be road warriors.”
Home or away, the Coyotes have the ability to hold opponents scoreless. Yet, offense continues to be a big strength.
The win helped the Coyotes bounce back from a 14-7 loss to Millenium last week.
Three games remain in the regular season before their run to possibly become back–to–back state championships begins.
Their next matchup is at Maricopa High School on October 29.
