Xavier Prep completed one of the most dominating years in sports by going tee to tee from late August through Wednesday afternoon as the top team in Division I, entering the state tournament held this week at the Aguila Golf Course with an 8-point lead in the rankings, and the run was completed with a 581 to 614 victory over Pinnacle to win the 38th team title in program history.

Pinnacle beat Xavier to win the championship in 2019 and Xavier beat Pinnacle in 2020 but Liberty won in 2021 and then Hamilton won last year. With the Gators winning only one championship in four years, there were hopes of parity in Division I but the team also has seven runner-up finishes dating back to 1979. Simply, the team has always gone home with a trophy of some kind.

Xavier had four scoring golfers finish in the top six but Hamilton junior Angela Chen won the individual medal with a 4-under-par 140 (73-76) over Xavier freshman Alexis Lamadrid (74-70: 144), Pinnacle freshman Kaitlyn Moreland (74-70: 144) and Xavier senior Lena Durette (74-70: 144). Hamilton has now claimed the last three individual titles with former standout Jennifer Seo winning in 2021 and 2022. Seo lost to former Liberty standout Mattie Frick in a playoff in 2020 and then Seo outlasted her teammate, Chen, last year in another playoff.

Chen came in ranked No. 5 in Division I but her championship experience appeared to be the difference down the stretch with a flurry of golfers trailing her. Chen finished even on the final hole but the trio of second place finishers all got there differently with Lamadrid and Durette picking up a bogey and Moreland picking up ground with a birdie.
