Five of the top ten teams in the state took part in the Old Pueblo Soccer Classic held in Tucson this past Friday and Saturday in matches, that will not be part of the power-ranking formula, but previewed the rest of the regular season.

No. 5 Madison Highland beat No. 3 Chino Valley 1-0 on Saturday afternoon but this victory will not have an affect on the rankings, or the standings in the Fall Central Region, where No. 1 Sedona Redrock holds firm at the top with a perfect 8-0 record.

The state playoffs will include four region champions and the next four highest ranked teams so, at this point, No. 1 Sedona Redrock (Fall Central), No. 2 Snowflake (Fall East), No. 10 Desert Christian (Fall South) and No. 7 Northland Prep (Fall North), are the leaders in each of the conferences. That would make No. 3 Chino Valley, No. 4 Payson, No. 5 Madison Highland and No. 6 Willcox the four at-large playoff teams with Desert Christian bumping No. 8 Blue Ridge out of the playoffs. But this is for today, the power-rankings are fluid and will change daily from until the regular season is over.

The first round for the boys tournament in scheduled for Oct. 24.

On the girl’s side, the playoffs will consist of four teams with two automatic berths from the two regions and two at-are bids, to be decided through a play-in format featuring the next four teams in the power-rankings.

As of today, No. 1 Show Low (Fall East) and No. 3 Northland Prep (Fall Central) are the two automatic berths and No. 2 St. Johns would play No. 6 Blue Ridge and No. 4 Payson would play No. 5 Snowflake in the play-in tournament.

The play-in round for the girls playoffs is slated for Oct. 24.
