It took five sets but Mountain View Marana held on to defeat Tucson High 3-2 Thursday night on the road. Ranked No. 12 in the 5A Conference coming in, the Mountain Lions are now 9-1 in power-ranking matches and the Badgers fell to 5-6 with a No. 26 ranking in the 6A Conference.

The first set went smoothly for Mountain View with 25-10 win but four straight aces from Gloria Valencia, and another from Ruthie Wnek, helped pace the Badgers to an 8-1 lead in the second set and that margin proved too difficult to overcome and Tucson tied the match up 1-1 with 25-17 victory.

The third set played evenly with Mountain View clinging to a 19-17 lead but Maggie McReynolds scored five of her 28 kills down the stretch to help give Mountain View a 25-17 win and a 2-1 lead. Tucson junior Kiera Hamilton came alive in the third set and the team connected on three more aces to help put the Badgers up 17-13 but Mountain View went on a 7-0 run to take what looked like a comfortable 20-17 lead but a service error stopped the bleeding and a kill from Sofie Trejo tied the set up at 20-20.

A kill from Hamilton and another from Alma Teilon, and one from Valencia, put Tucson up 24-22. McReynolds gave Mountain View life with a kill from Julia Weatherbie and then McReynolds flipped the script with a pass to Weatherbie and the set was tied up at 24-24. A violation at the net put Tucson up 25-24 and an ace from Trejo tied the match up 2-2 on the 26-24 victory.

The deciding fifth set is played to 15 and three kills from McReynolds with an ace from McReynolds put Mountain View up 4-1. It looked like the Mountain Lions were about to end the set early but a block from Hamilton and a kill from Hamilton, coupled with another ace, tied the set up 5-5. The set played out even from there until Carmen Arizpuro blocked a shot to give Tucson a 13-12 lead but a kill from Isabella Kilian tied it up 13-13 and then an ace from Megan Jacobson brought the Mountain Lions to match point at 14-13. Weatherbie found Kilian on the right side for the 15-13 win and a 3-2 match victory.

Emilie Rodriguez finished with 15 assists for Tucson and Hamilton had 11 kills and Teilon had five. Weatherbie had 45 assists for Mountain View with 28 kills coming from McReynolds and Kilian had nine kills.

Tucson opens up region play with a match at Marana (8-4) on Monday and Mountain View will host Nogales (3-6) on Tuesday. Mountain View hosts the Lion's Den Invitational Tournament from Oct. 13-14.
