The Horizon Huskies stole homecoming night from the Millennium Tigers with a victory of 43-13 Friday night in Goodyear.
After the coin toss, Millennium (3-2) elected to differ and kicked off to Horizon (4-1) to open the game.
Horizon started hot on its first drive. On the second play of the game from Horizon's 24-yard line, junior quarterback Jase Ashley broke off for a 66-yard scramble to put Horizon on the 10-yard line.
The long carry set up the game's first score, with sophomore running back Bodie Zamorano punching the ball in for six.
After scoring on the opening drive, Millennium got the chance to respond to Horizon. Millennium slowly marched down to the Horizon 33-yard line until it faced a fourth-and-2 play.
Millennium failed to convert, turning the ball back over to Horizon. Millennium struggled with moving the ball offensively for the rest of the game. Not once did it find itself in the red zone.
Once the Horizon offense took the field after the successful stop from the defense, Ashley marched the offense downfield. From the 18-yard line, Ashley tucked the ball and found the endzone for six, extending the Horizon lead 14-0.
"Credit to our O-line tonight," Ashley said. "They blocked their tails off."
Millennium, however, did not count itself out yet. It found some light after senior defensive back Jalen Dupree returned an interception for a pick-six to cut the lead down to 14-6.
Unfortunately for Millennium, it never found the endzone in the first half after the pick-six. After a stop by the Millennium defense on the following drive, it had a chance to tie up the game midway through the second quarter.
Millennium had some penalties go their way and found itself on the Horizon 47-yard line.
The drive immediately ended after senior linebacker Carson Kolb jumped on the loose ball fumbled by Millennium, giving the ball back to the hands of Ashley and the rest of the Horizon offense.
Horizon marched down the field and again scored on the ground. Senior running back Anthony Segura bulldozed his way through all three levels of the Millennium defense to extend the Horizon lead 21-6.
"Our run-game is our lifeblood," Horizon head coach Andy Litten said. "And being able to be physical and come after it."
Before the end of the half, Zamorano got his second touchdown of the night after a 9-yard carry, bringing the lead to 29-6.
Millennium opened the second half with the ball, and after a long drive, found itself in the endzone to cut the lead down to 29-13.
Horizon got it back and kept working on its original game plan: run the ball. After gaining two first downs, Zamorano broke off for a 31-yard sprint to the endzone to extend the lead to 36-13.
Before the clock hit zero, Horizon got the ball one last time. Who else but Zamorano to punch in his fourth TD from the 1-yard line to set the final score 43-13.
"All credit to the O-line tonight," Zamorano said. "Those guys blocked amazing and coach's game plan was great. We were cooking tonight."
The Horizon Huskies open up their region play, with their first region game being at Desert Mountain (5-0) in Scottsdale on Friday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. PST.
"We're not over-looking anyone," Zamorano said. "We just want to beat everyone up."
