Week 5 Ed Doherty Award Nominations

The Arizona Sports & Entertainment Commission (ASEC) and its managed entity, the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC), announced the recipients of the Week 5 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions, recognizing outstanding performances from games played the week of September 11.

"Another week of outstanding performances from across the state kept our Selection Committee busy while deciding on their nominations,” said Rob Yowell, committee co-chair.  “Clutch play, record-setting efforts and high-level competition have become the norm in Arizona high school football, and we congratulate all the medallion winners recognized in Week 5.”

Outstanding performances from Week 5 medallion recipients include:

 

Shamar Berryhill – Jr. WR, Sabino High School

Berryhill had 11 catches for 241 yards and 4 touchdowns in a 50-21 victory over Safford.

 

Lucas George – Jr. RB, Queen Creek High School

In a 71-60 win over Canyon View, George ran for 385 yards and 3 touchdowns on 33 carries.

 

Cameron Hackworth – Sr. QB, Sabino High School

Hackworth completed 29 of 38 passes for 453 yards and 6 touchdowns in the 50-21 win over

Safford.

 

Jaxson Jones – Sr. DE, Yuma Catholic High School

Jones recorded 9 solo tackles (11 total), including 5 for a loss, with 2 sacks and 2 forced fumbles

in defeating Thatcher, 42-20.

 

Adam Mohammed – Sr. RB, Apollo High School

With 4 touchdowns on 9 carries (totaling 170 yards) in a 48-0 win over West Point, Mohammed

now has 78 TDs in his prep career, breaking the 5A state record.

 

Malachi Wilt – So. QB, Tonopah Valley High School

In a 47-28 win over Trivium Prep, Wilt was 41 of 59 in passing for 626 yards and 6 TDs.

Since its inception in 1987, the Ed Doherty Award has served as the State of Arizona’s highest individual high school football honor, annually recognizing the most outstanding player on and off the field. Recipients are selected for demonstrating athletic excellence and unwavering integrity, along with a commitment to academics, community, and school pride.
