Catalina improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2005, and the fifth time in program history dating back to 1955, after the Trojans beat ALA-Anthem South 30-20 Friday night at home. The Titans fell to 0-4 on the year but the team scored 20 points to help offset three straight weeks of not being able to see the end zone.

The game was called with 3:05 left in the third after a lengthy game where several players on both sides received injuries including a 30-minute delay with an ambulance call for an Anthem South player that prompted the final decision to end the game at that point.

Titan sophomore quarterback Brady Rushing finished the game with 89 yards passing on eight completions and his 24-yard toss to freshman Maurice Lewis put Anthem South up 6-0 with 9:05 left in the first quarter. Catalina came right back and senior Sage Antone broke free from 36 yards out to tie the game up at 6-6 with 4:42 left in the quarter.

Juelz McCarthy put the Titans back up 12-6 after he broke a potential tackle for a loss into a 68-yard scoring run down his sideline with 3:15 left in the quarter. Catalina had difficulty moving the ball on the next set of downs and, at one point, the Trojans faced a fourth and 32 at their own 38 yard line but Antone faked the punt and he rushed for 17 yards, which wouldn’t have been enough for a first down, but the Titans drew a penalty on the run which gave the team new life. Antone scored a few plays later from six yards out and junior lineman Korri Sanders ran the 2-point conversion to put Catalina up 14-12 with 9:52 left in the first half.

After a couple of punts, Anthem South earned a first-and-goal from the eight but the team lost the ball on downs on the drive. Catalina was forced to punt again and this time Rushing hit Logan Nadratowski from 15 yards out to put Anthem South up 20-14 with Nadratowski adding a 2-point conversion with 47.7 seconds left in the half.

Antone finished with 251 yards rushing on 18 carries and sophomore QB Eli Gurnett rushed for 56 yards on 12 carries and the combined threat came alive in the third quarter with Gurnett adding two TD runs to cap lengthy drives set up by Antone. Gurnett added a 2-point run and Sanders rushed for another for the 30-20 win.

Catalina will face a big test next week with a trip to Bisbee (1-2) in an attempt to go 4-0 for only the third time in program history. Anthem South only played four games last year as an independent but the Titans have a full schedule this year and a trip to Willcox (0-3) next week could be a possible chance for victory.
