DIVISION I: SUNNYSIDE SETS RECORDS

 

Sunnyside scored 307.5 points to capture the 36th state championship in program history since 1979 and the sixth in a row since 2018 under head coach Anthony Leon. Leon moves into sixth place on the career championship list:

Robert DeBerry moved over to Tucson High and he recorded his 175th state placer this year. Don Klostreich was honored before the Parade of Champions for his service and dedication to the sport of wrestling along with legendary figures Rocky Nelson and Dave Vibber.

Sunnyside set a record with 307.5 points and the program now owns three of the top team scores in championship history:

1. 307.5 Sunnyside 2023

2. 301 Morenci 2021

3. 282 Sunnyside 2004

4. 278.5 Mingus 2007

5. 277.5 Sunnyside 2020

 

With seven individual champions, the Blue Devils came up one championship short of their own record of eight set in 2022. Sunnyside standout James Armstrong became the 41st individual to graduate with four state championships. There will not be a four-time state champion in any division next winter.
