Prescott topples Marcos de Niza

Prescott's fast start to the 2022-2023 boys hoops season continued on Wednesday with a third consecutive double-figure victory. The Badgers brokered strong middle quarters to defeat host Marcos de Niza, 81-57, in a 4A non-region game.

Prescott's Uriah Tenette poured in a game-high 33 points. The five-foot-9 sophomore point guard spread his points pretty evenly with 19 in the first half helping the Badgers (3-0) to a 42-29 hafltime advantage. Post play wasn't wanting with 6-10 center Zane Gaul checking in with 17 points.

Marcos de Niza (5-3) had two players score in double figures. Senior guard Marcus McClure with 17 points and the team's leading scorer to this point - Charles Clark - with 10 points.

The game was tight the first 12 minutes. Prescott led 16-14 after the first period. Its lead was the same (23-21) with five minutes remaining in the second quarter. A 19-8 run to the final buzzer of the second period was the start of the Badgers pulling away. Tenette scored 11 of the points in the run and Gaul four points - two buckets on putbacks.

Marcos de Niza did not lose ground the first half of the third quarter, but Prescott increased its lead to 61-41 by the end of the period. Tenette scored nine of the 13 points in that run even contributing via offensive putbacks. The Badgers began the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, starting with a Gaul three-point play. 

Prescott has a few days off before returning to action Dec. 12 at home against Deer Valley (5-1). Marcos de Niza gets a day off and next plays Friday at Shadow Mountain (0-5).
