The ALA Gilbert North tennis squad is looking to have another strong season as they begin their 2022 campaign. The Eagles went undefeated in the regular season last year winning 13 straight matches before losing to Paradise Valley in the Division II semi-finals.

“We were humbled,” said head coach Dave Nowick. “Now I feel like there is a lot more focus to actually play through and get it done.”

The team is focused, but they also seem very relaxed at the same time. Their demeanor off the court is very easy going. They seem to be having all the fun in the world playing tennis with their teammates.

“I love interacting with the kids,” says Nowick. “I’ve been working with this group for a few years and it’s great.”

The Eagles squad is full of upperclassmen talent. Seniors Tessa Guttery and Kira McArthur and junior Sienna Buttafuoco make up the top three for the girl’s team. For the boys however, sophomore Cole Hanson looks to be an impressive player for ALA Gilbert North.Hanson has even brewed a bit of a rivalry with his own teammates.

“Cole helps me stay focused, and helps me get going, but I gotta beat him,” joked senior Alex Merillo.

The team has had their fun while also being extremely successful. They defeated Odyssey institute 9-0 in their season opener and should be one of the top teams in division II this season. As a team, they have lofty aspirations.

“We want to be in the top four in the state again,” said Merillo. “We want to send our singles and our doubles team to the finals and win it.” Nowick shares his player’s goals, and under his leadership, the Eagles’ tennis squad will continue to aim high.
