PHOENIX - Greenway senior Brielle Walker led the Demons to victory with a hat trick in her last high school soccer game on Friday at Monterey Park, home of the Saint Mary's Knights. The two 4A Skyline teams finished off their seasons with an exhilarating game, as the Demons triumphed, 4-1.

Knight senior Miranda Castro scored the first goal of the afternoon within five minutes of the referee's beginning whistle. Castro's score lifted the spirits of the Saint Mary’s fans on the sidelines. “It felt good to play with this team for the last time,” Castro said. “It's like home here.”

The Knights say goodbye to seven seniors, including Castro who is committed to play soccer at Arizona Christan University this fall.

Although the game ended with a victory for the Demons, Walker was not impressed with the performance of her team out on the pitch. “I don’t look at the quantity,” Walker said. “I look at the quality of play and I don’t think that our quality was very good because I have very high standards for these girls.”

At the seven-minute mark Demon sophomore Marissa Rubalcava scored Greenway's first goal of the evening. This after a corner kick led to traffic in front of the goal.

Just before haltime Greenway broke the tie score with a penalty kick by Walker, which left the Knights trailing the Demons 2-1 at halftime.

The second half was exciting.

The Knights fought hard to keep possession of the ball. However, the Demons' consistent offensive attacking became successful.

The second half was fueled by back-to-back goals by Walker, giving her a hat trick, which earned her loud chanting from the visitors side of the field.

Unfortunately, the two squads' season finale devolved into a scene of ugly behavior from  group of fans on the sidelines in the wake of Walker's brilliant play. Knight coach Daniella Ledezma received a yellow card, which was followed by Knight junior Emma Sullivan also being issued a yellow card.

“I got a yellow card because my assistant was talking back to the ref,” coach Ledezma said. “He didn’t like it and he gave me a card for it.”

Soon after there was a dispute with one of the referees and the Saint Mary’s fans on the sidelines. This resulted in some of the fans being ejected from the field.

The game was stopped for more than eight minutes as fans argued with referees and it ended with Knight athletic director Greg Fahrendorf approaching fans and ordering them to leave with 28 minutes left in the match.

Moving forward, Coach Ledezma has high hopes for the Knights future seasons.

“For our future we are looking to improve more on defensively working more towards disciplinary actions,” said Ledezma. “Knowing that there is a consequence when we are losing a ball.”

This was the last game of the season for both the Knights and the Demons.
