Ironwood Ridge storms to repeat in Division II wrestling

Ironwood Ridge made a statement a month ago when it won the annual Flowing Wells Wrestling Invitational with top schools from many divisions in attendance.

That seemed to be a springboard to a second straight Division II title on Saturday night as the Nighthawks rolled up an even bigger margin of victory this year at  Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.

Ironwood Ridge amassed 204.5 points to take the title easily over runner-up Gila Ridge (150). Ironwood Ridge trailed first-day leader Gila Ridge by 6.5-points when Saturday's competition began. When it ended the Nighthawks claimed more individual champs than any team (3) and more state placers (10) than any team.  Marcos de Niza (139.5) was fourth and Sunrise Mountain (98.5) was fifth. Ironwood Ridge won by 25.5 points over Marcos de Niza in 2011.

Winning titles for Ironwood Ridge were Trevor Willson (126), Troy Taylor (145) and Matt Filbert (152). Backing up those crowns were second-place finishes from Tate Sandifer (132) and Lisiate Otuafi (220), fifths from Joey Howard (113), Clint Allen (138), Tristan Mordecai (170) and Cameron Nelson (195). Scott Simmons (182) was a sixth-place finisher.

Top efforts of the tournament went to Shadow Mountain heavyweight  Luke Braun, who repeated as champ and completed a perfect season 28-0. The only other undefeated wrestler was Pueblo's Alvaro Gallego (106). Gallego finished an astonishing 50-0.

Sunrise Mountain and Flagstaff each had two wrestlers win titles. Sunrise Mountain's were Kevin Hunt (120) and Brennan Smith (160). Flagstaff boasted Brad Lindsay (138) and Austin Gaun (182).

Marcos de Niza had the only other repeat champ in the tournament in Jesse Morales (132), who beat Sandifer in that final. Sandifer was a champ last year at 125.

The rest of the 2012 individual champs were: Marana Mountain View's Bailey Janis (113), Lake Havasu's Luis Rivera (170), Ironwood's Matt Lopez (195) and Peoria's Jaimen Bennalley (220).
