Thunderbird repeats as Division III state wrestling champ

Thunderbird succesfully defended its state team title Friday night with six  placers in the Division III wrestling tournament at  Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.

Thunderbird finished with 121 points to outdistance three other tightly packed teams -- Mingus (105) and Amphitheater (103) and Blue Ridge (103).

The highlight of the meet belonged  to Safford's Trey Andrews (120 pounds), who captured his fourth individual title in four tries and finished 56-1 this season. Andrews beat Thunderbird's Fernando Carrasco by pin in the title match. Andrews pinned all four of his state tourney opponents.

 Thunderbird crowned one state champ starting off the finals with a win from Matt Mainez (106). Thunderbird received runner-up finishes from Ryan Felipe (113) and Fernando Carrasco (120), third-place finishes from Jawan Pugh (160) and Isaiah Gomez (126) and a sixth-place finish from Tyler Schwabe (195).

Amphitheater was one of two schools with two individual champs -- Floyd Jones (220) and heavyweigtht Austin Andrade. Andrade was the only D-III wrestler to complete an undefeated season (53-0). Moon Valley, which finished fifth as a team, had two champions -- Ryan  Vandall (126) and Ryan Kulesa (152).

Four wrestlers successfully defended titles from last year - Andrews, Rio Rico's Marky Lopez (145), Mingus' Justin Zaske (160) and Blue Ridge's Kevin Henderson (182).  Rounding out the other individual champs were Show Low's Blake Schweigert (113), Tempe High's James Sanchez (132), Payson's Jacob Spear (138), Chino Valley's Patrick Dalcerro (170) and Empire's Dirk McOmber (195).
