On Wednesday, April 28th, the Chandler Prep Titans hosted the San Tan Charter Roadrunners in their last home game of the season. The Titans dominated offensively, scoring at least four runs in every inning and all of the starters scoring at least once. The game was mercy ruled after four and half innings of play with a final score of 23-3.
Chandler Prep played an interesting yet effective pitching lineup to showcase their seniors. Five out of the six seniors on the field spent an inning on the mound. Senior shortstop Nolan Bailey was a leader in the infield and, though unfortunately not getting an inning to pitch, single-handedly got three outs and turned a pop up into a double play for the final two outs of the game.
Senior pitcher Daniel Peake pitched the first inning and did some of his best work with three strikeouts against four batters. Four of the five senior pitchers got at least one strikeout and the Titans saw the advantages of having a second baseman on the mound as Senior Joey Pupillo expertly fielded a hard-hit grounder that was headed out to right field to get the easy out at first. Head Coach Martin Vilaboy talked about the choice to let the seniors pitch on their night:
“This is a great group of seniors. They are one of most enjoyable and greatest group of guys I’ve had. These guys have been bugging me to pitch all year and we kind of took them seriously, so we just wanted to give them a chance. We really wanted them to be able to have some fun on senior night and get on the mound. This group of seniors, though, have played a lot of sports at Chandler Prep between them and across all the sports. We felt that this group of seniors needed to be honored a little bit specially.”
Offensively, the Titans were terrific across the board. Seniors Peake, Jonah Hansen, and freshman Aashish Sreejith reached base on each of their plate appearances. Senior Juan Pietri led the team in RBIs, but all of the starters earned at least one RBI during Wednesday’s game. Two noteworthy hits were the game’s two triples to left-center from Peake and junior Crew Cascaes.
Chandler Prep shined most in the third inning with thirteen batters, nine runs, and seven hits. Senior Reese Vilaboy kept the Roadrunner outfielders awake that inning with two long fly ball singles to left and right field.
The Titans play their second-to-last game of the regular season away against the Horizon Honors Eagles on April 29th at 6:00pm.
