Southern Arizona dominates Flowing Wells Wrestling Invite

Schools from southern Arizona rocked Saturday at the 46th annual Flowing Wells Wrestling Invitational with Ironwood Ridge garnering the team title for the first time ever and seven individual titles going to wrestlers from Tucson schools or Safford.

Ironwood Ridge became the fourth different team to win the tournament in as many years finishing with 175.5 points. Ironwood Ridge, which was runner-up to Sunnyside in the tournament last year and the Division II state champ last year, tallied two individual champs -- Trevor Wilson at 126 pounds and Matt Filbert (145). Cibola was second in the team chase at 165.5 and Sunnyside was third (148). The tournament's outstanding wrestler was Desert Mountain 160-pounder Dante Patrick.

Sunnyside equaled Ironwood Ridge in individual champs with Andres Piedra winning at 138 and Cedric Gonzales at 220. Marcos de Niza and Horizon also came away with two individual champs. Marcos de Niza's Jesse Morales prevailed at 132 and Adam Pavlenko won at 195. Horizon took first with Bryant Wood (145) and Garrett Ryan (170) its champs.

Rounding out the individual champions honor roll were Pueblo's Alvaro Gallego (106); Thunderbird's Ryan Felipe (113); Safford's Trey Andrews (120); Highland's Christian Allen (182) and Amphitheater's Austin Andrade (HWT). Repeat FW hampions from last year were Andrews , Morales  and Gonzales. Andrews, Wilson and Morales have won state titles either in 2010 or 2011.
