Red Mountain stole the show Saturday at the finals of the 2011  Dobson Mustangs Soccer Classic with its boys and girls teams claiming the titles.

Red Mountain's girls got things started in the 9 a.m. match with Mesquite, pulling out a 1-0 win. The lone goal of the match came in the 62nd minute on a penalty kick by the Lions Caylee Carter.

The boys followed up a couple hours later stopping Camelback, 2-1, to complete a 5-0 mark for the week. A rebound goal by Matt Nichols in the 8th minute and what proved to be an important second goal in the 64th minute on a well-executed corner kick from Carson Frost to Chris Wascher (header) were the scoring for the boys squad.

Red Mountain's girls posted a 5-0 record for the week's work -- all via shutout. They improved to 9-0-3 on the season with a rash of ties keeping them from advancing earlier in the month at the Diablos Soccer Classic in Tempe.

"All the credit has to go to our defense," Red Mountain girls coach Andy Barber said. "I thought we controlled the tempo. They like to counter-attack and we didn't allow them many opportunities."

The win over Mesquite was the second in three days by Red Mountain. The Mountain Lions topped Mesquite, 2-0 in pool play on Thursday. For the tournament Red Mountain's girls outscored its opposition, 11-0.

Mesquite, which dropped to 4-6-1 for the season, was better than its 3-2 mark for the week indicated. They upset tournament favorite Desert Vista on Friday in the semifinals, 2-1, in overtime. The Wildcats allowed four goals -- two on penalty kicks. Both goals Red Mountain scored in their first meeting were of the normal variety.

"It was a tough one to lose and a tough call didn't go our way," Mesquite coach Scott Smith said. "Beating Desert Vista was big because we played way better than we did when they beat us earlier. Our defense played well against Red Mountain, too."

Red Mountain boys assistant coach Cody Wolfe, subbing for absent head coach Anthony Presnell the final two games of the tournament, was more than pleased with the defense the Lions displayed, particularly with the aggressiveness of Camelback after the Spartans fell behind 1-0 quickly.

"The guys stepped it up this week," Wolfe said. "The week before the tournament we were able to practice and fixed a lot of things. I'm sure they had more shots that we did, but we capitalized on some good chances. You have to do that when you get those."

Nichols goal in the 8th minute came with alertness and hustle as he continued charging the goal after teammate Max Duran's shot caromed off Camelback keeper John Flores.

Wascher's goal in the 64th minute came on the third of three corners Red Mountain got in succession midway through the second half. Frost lofted his corner to the far post and Wascher was more height than most players was in perfect position and space to knock it home.

That took the wind out of Camelback, but the Spartan did manage to scored with six seconds left on a header by Juan Omar Apale.

"I wasn't that upset about that goal," Wolfe said. "It was a good play on their part. We got  too far ahead of ourselves. The outcome was decided at that point."
