On Friday night, under head coach and offensive coordinator, Danny Norris, the Gilbert Christian Knights punched their ticket to the playoffs with a 35-6 win over the Coolidge Bears. Brody Curtner had 148 yards rushing, averaged ten yards per carry and had one touchdown for the night. Matthew Hershey, quarterback, ran for two touchdowns and threw for one to Marcus McWilliams.
Jace Feely led the defense with ten tackles, three sacks, a forced fumble and two safeties. Jace also connected on a 27 yard field goal and averaged 42 yards on his punts.
Luke Webb added nine tackles on defense, followed by Rob Rowan with eight and Nigel Stanbury and Brody Curtner each with five. To cap off an amazing senior night, Sean Baca intercepted a Coolidge pass. Thank you to our ten seniors who have poured so much into this football program. The Knights will head to Tucson this Friday to take on Pusch Ridge Christian Academy.
We are very proud of our football team and the outstanding coaching staff which also includes: Bob Hershey, Associate Head Coach; Peter Heintz, Defensive Coordinator; Andy Montaño, Offensive/Defensive Line Coach; Zach Galaviz, Special Teams Coordinator; and Brandon Cole, Defensive Backs Coach. The Knights have made it this far by the coordinated efforts of both coaching and the team players.
Coach Norris had this to say about the team thus far, “2020 has been a season unlike any other. The young men in our football program have been working hard since June 1st for a season that nobody was sure would happen. We placed our trust in God and continued to push forward so that we could be in the position we are right now. I am so thankful to have a senior class that has come together and stayed committed to each other during these uncertain times. Their faith was challenged, yet they rose above, time and time again; and we now have the opportunity to play in the playoffs. Although nothing is guaranteed in this 2020 COVID-19 season, we are cherishing each moment we can be together and play the sport we love. We are all we got, we are all we need. Go Knights!”
Come cheer on the team this Friday in Tucson!
