New coach. New style. Still rolling.

Hamilton's girls soccer team opened defense of its big-school state title Wednesday night with new a part of the recipe by blanking Marana Mountain View, 3-0, at Hamilton.

Hamilton, which posted a 25-0-1 record last year with defense its calling card (22 shutouts), used a two-goal, one assist effort from freshman forward McKaya Brown to open the campaign successfully for new coach Mark Eggleston. Senior forward Emily Ravenhill chipped in a goal and an assist.

"The girls are getting used to a different style, a different system," Eggleston said. "They did a great job tonight. We have to make sure everybody is on board and keep building on this as we go along."

Eggleston liked the result of a shutout, but also said part of the change in style will be  seen going forward.

"We don't just want to sit back," Eggleston said. "We want to get after teams and pick up the pace. Keep coming after our opponent."

Marana Mountain View, (3-3), which reached the quarterfinals of last week's Brandon Bean Invitational in Tucson, made a game of it for 70 minutes. Hamilton didn't score until the 36th minute as Brown was found in the right corner by senior Rachel Shedd and booted her first varsity goal home from about 10 yards out.

Hamilton kept building up chances in the second half, but wasn't able to get its second goal until the 69th minute. A cross from Brown allowed Ravenhill to blast  a shot that rattled off players at the goalmouth and trickled in. Two minutes later Ravenhill and Jaime Salas assisted Brown on a nice tap in past keeper Shelby Penrod.

Hamilton used two freshmen in its starting lineup and played five from that class extensively in the match. That included using junior keeper Holleigh Nebeker, in place of veteran standout Laura Glew, who was out with a concussion.

"Our back line did an outstanding job and Holleigh stepped in  and was amazing," Eggleston said.

Marana Mountain View, wihich reached the 5A-II semifinals last year, returned several solid players from last  year, led by junior midfielder Justene Kesterson.

"This was a measuring point for us," Mountain View interim coach Amy Garelick, subbing for new head coach Kaissa Gurvine, who gave birth last week,  said. "They were the champs last year. We need to see how far off we are. We had some chances to score and didn't convert.  Even in the last 16 seconds. You have to put goals away when you have the opportunity."
