Interstate girls hoops: Window Rock Lady Scouts beats Wingate Lady Bears, 64-19

Utilizing its entire bench, the Window Rock Lady Scouts beat the Wingate, (New Mexico) Lady Bears, 64-19, in an interstate girl's basketball game at the Window Rock Events Center in Fort Defiance on Tuesday night.

Mercy rule went into effect during the fourth quarter, where there was a running clock.

Window Rock head coach Sharon Toadecheenie said played a strong game and were relaxed.

"The team played outstanding," Toadecheenie said. "We played outstanding defense. We executed offensively. We ran the offense well. We didn't have very many turnovers. We took care of the ball. We had fun on the floor. We did good things on both ends of the court. There is room for improvement."

Senior forward Rachael Smiley scored four of Window Rock's six points to begin the game in first quarter. Alyisha Hale added a basket.

A three-point basket by Leaira Casamero and a basket by Mariah Mariano brought Wingate within one point, 6-5 with three minutes remaining in the opening stanza.

Wingate's Mariano canned a free throw for the Lady Bears' final point of the first frame. Sophomore guard Caitlin Belone knocked down a trey, followed by baskets by Smiley, senior Jana Solee as the Lady Scouts took a 13-6 first quarter lead.

Window Rock outscored Wingate, 19-0, before the Lady Bears tallied its only two points of the second period. The Lady Scouts held a 35-8 halftime advantage.

After two minutes of play, Window Rock built its lead to 41-10. The Lady Scouts outscored the Lady Bears, 11-3, for a 52-13 lead in the third quarter.

Window Rock continued its hot hand, canning nine points, for a 61-13 advantage at the end of the third period.

Wingate outscored Window Rock, 6-3, during the fourth quarter, while playing with a running clock, due to mercy rule.

Junior Terrial Dawes knocked down 13 points to pace Window Rock. Solee added 10 points and Robbie Talkalai tallied seven points for Window Rock.

Casamero and Mariano both canned five points apiece to pace Wingate.

Window Rock, 4-1 overall, will play its next game on Friday in the Sedona Red Rock girls basketball tournament. The Lady Scouts face host Sedona, 1-2, on Friday at 10:30 a.m. The Lady Scouts meet Cicero Prep Academy, (1-4), of Scottsdale, at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. The Lady Scouts plays its third game of the tournament on Friday at 6 p.m. against Scottsdale Christian, 1-3.
