34 teams are taking part in the Brandon Bean Kickoff Classic hosted by Salpointe. In all, 18 boys teams and 16 girls teams are competing in four days of pool play with Monday and Tuesday taking place at high schools across Southern Arizona.

The Brandon Bean Classic is held every year to honor a former Salpointe player who passed away in 1992 after an on-field collision at a soccer scrimmage. In addition, the tournament also honors former Lancer Laura Kea who died in an auto accident on her way to a soccer tournament.

 

IN THE FIELD

 

Sunnyside won the boys championship last year and Ironwood Ridge won the girls title. The field features the 4A state champion Salpointe girls and runner-up Catalina Foothills. Ironwood Ridge finished in the 5A semifinals last year and the Rincon/UHS girls made it to the quarterfinal round. The Sahuaro girls made it to the 4A quarterfinals and Sahuarita made it to the 3A quarterfinals.

On the boy’s side, Sunnyside went undefeated to win the 5A state championship and Salpointe won the 4A title. The two teams will meet in pool play on Wednesday night. Catalina Foothills made it to the 4A semifinals and Douglas finished in the quarterfinal round. Rincon/University made it to the 5A semifinals and Cienega ended in the quarterfinals.

Mia Welch scored two goals to help Ironwood Ridge defeat Vista Grande 3-0; Flavia Burrell collected four saves to help preserve a 2-0 win for Catalina Foothills over Buena; Haley Harris recorded a goal and an assist to help lead Cienega past Walden Grove 3-1; Sunnyside standout Fabian Mendoza had two goals and two assists in a 7-0 win over Sahuarita; Eight players recorded a goal for the Salpointe boys in an 11-0 win over Sabino
