August 27, 2019 by Oree Foster, AZPreps365
Senior quarterback Ramon Sanchez, junior running back Ira Tullous and senior linebacker/running back Mark Ballejos turned in key performances to pace St. Johns Redskins to a 41-0 victory over Kingman Academy in a season opening non-region football encounter in St. Johns.
With the victory, St. Johns head coach Mike Morgan has 328 career wins, second all-time behind the late Paul Moro's 336 victories.
Morgan said St. Johns' running backs ran hard. He said St. Johns' defensive linemen pressured the quarterback all night and displayed fundamentals by tackling well.
"Our offensive line must block better," Morgan said. "Defensively, senior linebacker Mark Ballejos had five quarterback sacks."
Sanchez threw two touchdown passes. Sanchez connected with Ballejos on an 18-yard scoring strike in the second quarter. Placekicker Gage Trickey booted the pigskin between the uprights for the PAT. Later in the second quarter, Sanchez found junior wide receiver Cage Heap for a 16-yard touchdown pass.
Senior running back Tanner Crosby raced into the end zone untouched from 1-yard in the opening quarter. Sanchez tacked on the two-point PAT.
St. Johns held a 27-0 halftime advantage, as both teams headed into the locker room.
Senior defensive back Graham Nielson picked off an errant aerial pass and returned the pass interception 64-yard for a touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Tullous scampered 19-yards for a touchdown. Trickey's kick was good.
St. Johns, 1-0, travels to Rock Point, 0-0, to face the Cougars at 7 p.m. on Friday.
