Navajo student-athletes sign women's basketball letter-of-intent

Jacqulynn "JJ" Nakai, a Navajo, signed a NCAA DI letter-of-intent to continue her education and playing women's basketball at University of Nevada-Reno, of the Mountain West Conference, this year.

Nakai played at Coconino High School in Flagstaff, before her two years at Pima Community College, of Tucson.

Nakai turned in a stellar season at Pima Community College. For the second straight season, Nakai earned National Junior College Athletic Association First Team All-America honors. In addition, Nakai was selected Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Nakai set a school record, scoring 1,397 points in 35 games, for 24.1 points per game. She handed out 6.7 assists, hauled down 5.5 rebounds and recorded 2.2 steal per puting.

The 5-foot-7 Nakai led ACCAC in scoring and finished third in the NJCAA.

Shauna Bribescas, a 5-foot-11 Navajo, played forward for Pima Communi9ty College.

Bribescas signed her letter-of-intent with University of Hawaii-Hilo, a NCAA DII institution of the Pacific West Conference.

Bribescas played her high school basketball at Dobson in Mesa. She was selected NJCAA Second Team All-America. She earned ACCAC Second Team and All-Region First Team this year.

She averaged 15.8 points per game, 8.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per contest.

Nakai and Bribescas were instrumental in leading Pima Community College to fifth place at the NJCAA national tournament this year.

Nakai and Bribescas were coached by Todd Holthaus.

Nahatabaa Nacona, a Navajo, signed a women's basketball national letter-of-intent with Eastern Nazarene College, of Quincy, Ma.

Nacona played at Chinle High School before competing two years at North Platte Community, a junior college in Nebraska.

She averaged 11.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and handed out 1.4 assists.

She was selected All-Region IX team and Nebraska Community College Athletic All-Conference. She earned her Associate of Science degree.
